Christian Marclay’s “The Clock” (2010) — which plays at MoMA this winter — is number one on ARTINFO’s list of the 100 most iconic artworks of the last five years.
The Clock is a spectacular and hypnotic 24-hour work of video art. Marclay has brought together thousands of clips from the entire history of cinema, from silent films to the present, each featuring an exact time on a clock, on a watch, or in dialogue. The resulting collage tells the accurate time at any given moment, making it both a work of art and literally a working timepiece: a cinematic memento mori.
